An 85-year-old Bloomington man was pronounced dead Friday after a two-vehicle crash on the westbound State Road 45/46 bypass near the I-69 overpass, a busy stretch that effectively rings the city. Westbound lanes were shut down for several hours while first responders worked the scene and cleared debris.
Crash Details And Emergency Response
Police say the collision involved a 2005 Cadillac SRX and a 2024 International box truck. Witnesses told investigators that both vehicles left the north side of the roadway and ended up in a ditch.
A passenger in the box truck reported that the Cadillac “suddenly turned directly into the path of the oncoming truck.” Emergency medical personnel pronounced the Cadillac’s driver dead at the scene. Authorities are withholding his identity until family members are notified, and an autopsy has been scheduled in the coming days, according to WISH-TV.
The driver of the box truck, a 46-year-old man from Orleans, was taken to a local hospital and voluntarily submitted to a blood draw. Because a commercial vehicle was involved, Indiana State Police assisted Bloomington officers with the response.
