Wing Park Golf Course just leveled up its post-round scene, with a new whiskey bar and a permanently parked food truck quietly rolling into the historic Elgin course. Chip Shots Golf & Whiskey Bar is now open inside the freshly finished clubhouse and is already pulling in golfers and nearby neighbors to its patio, simulator bays, and to-go window at the truck.
Clubhouse makeover brings simulators and a pro shop
The $4.3 million, 9,600-square-foot clubhouse replaces an original structure that dates to 1936, according to City of Elgin documents. Reporting by the Daily Herald notes that the building packs in three advanced golf and sport simulators, outdoor hitting bays and a pro shop. Inside, a timeline mural traces Wing Park’s long history, and flexible spaces are set up for leagues and private events, city and operator materials show.
Locally run and neighborhood-focused
The hospitality program is in the hands of Alan and Breanne Moreno, the couple behind Plank Road Tap Room on Elgin’s west side. Their business site highlights a strong craft-beer and whiskey focus, according to the Plank Road Tap Room website. The Morenos say they plan to adapt the Tap Room’s formula of rotating food trucks and a family-friendly beer garden for Chip Shots, dialing it in for a golf-course crowd.
Food, drinks and hours
The menu sticks to elevated comfort food with golf-themed names, including the Fairway Burger, the Angry Birdie hot-chicken sandwich and a pulled-pork "Mike." The permanently parked food truck is serving daily lunch through early evening, according to the Daily Herald. The Chip Shots website lists bar hours as 11 a.m.–9 p.m., with food-truck service running 11 a.m.–7 p.m.
Historic course gets a new gathering spot
Wing Park’s nine-hole course opened in 1908 and is described as the state’s oldest nine-hole municipal course on the facility’s official site. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, according to the National Park Service nomination. The new clubhouse effectively turns the course into a neighborhood social hub on land the city has managed for more than a century, mirroring a broader move by municipal courses to add social amenities and keep visitors coming year-round.
What the city expects
The city council signed off on the hospitality agreement last fall and authorized the operating services contract that puts the Morenos in charge of the venue, per City of Elgin records. Officials say they expect the clubhouse to host simulator leagues, whiskey tastings and private events on top of regular tee-time traffic, turning what was once a quick nine into a full evening out.
