A 1-year-old boy has died after being pulled from a private pond in Greensburg, Indiana, last Friday, in a heartbreaking incident that has shaken the local community. Authorities say his parent found him unresponsive near a dock, immediately started life-saving measures, and the child was then flown to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where he later died.
Conservation officers investigating
Conservation officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources recovered the child from the private pond and have launched an investigation into what happened, according to WLWT. Decatur County central dispatch reportedly notified conservation officers shortly before 9 p.m. on July 17. First responders performed life-saving care at the scene before the child was airlifted to Cincinnati Children’s. The coroner's office later listed drowning as the cause of death, WLWT reports.
Why toddlers are especially vulnerable
National data show drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury death for very young children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that drowning is the top cause of injury death for children ages 1 to 4. Experts say toddlers can slip into the water and drown quickly and quietly, even in small bodies of water such as backyard ponds.
Local safety guidance
The Decatur County Sheriff's Office provides child-safety guidance for families on supervising kids around water. Their reminders include maintaining constant, close supervision, using barriers and life jackets for non-swimmers, and learning CPR, along with swim lessons when appropriate. The office also points residents to national drowning-prevention resources and tips.
