Indiana University defensive end Tyrone Burrus Jr. was arrested by Bloomington police on Thursday and booked into the Monroe County Jail on preliminary charges that include strangulation and domestic battery. He remained in custody Friday morning while IU athletics officials said they are gathering facts and will monitor how the legal process unfolds.
Burrus, an Indianapolis native, signed with the Hoosiers in 2025 after a standout prep career at Warren Central and has seen limited game action while redshirting. According to his team biography on Indiana University Athletics, he played in two games last season, made his college debut in Indiana's 56-3 win over Purdue and recorded a sack in IU's spring game.
Bloomington police took Burrus into custody Thursday and booked him on counts of strangulation and domestic battery, as reported by IndyStar. A jail officer told reporters that Burrus remained in the Monroe County facility Friday morning, and the Monroe Circuit Court clerk said an initial hearing could be scheduled as soon as Monday.
What the charges mean under Indiana law
Under Indiana law, a Level 6 felony, which often covers strangulation allegations, carries a fixed sentencing range of six months to two-and-a-half years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
