An Indiana Fever game in Seattle turned into a referendum on Sophie Cunningham’s views about transgender athletes, after a rally outside Climate Pledge Arena put the controversy front and center before tipoff. The Fever won 105-95 Tuesday, but the bigger postgame story was who did not step to the microphones.
Supporters gathered outside the arena for a rally backing Cunningham and promoting Washington initiatives IL26-001 and IL26-638. In a report by Chicago Tribune, a Fever public-relations representative said the organization and Cunningham had no knowledge of the demonstration and no contact with its organizers. After the game, Indiana also did not make Cunningham or Caitlin Clark available for questions, while coach Stephanie White and players Kelsey Mitchell and Monique Billings handled the media.
That silence came after Cunningham doubled down on comments that have made her a national flashpoint. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, Cunningham said she wanted to protect young girls in sports from having to compete against what she called biological men, then described her position as common sense. Seattle fans booed her when she entered Tuesday’s game and again during her first free-throw attempts.
Seattle Rally Tapped Into Washington’s Ballot Fight
The demonstration was separate from the Fever and landed in a city where the issue is already part of an active statewide political fight. Heather Weiner, a spokesperson for No Hate in Washington State, described the experience outside the arena as positive and said Washington is caring and inclusive, while Storm coach Sonia Raman said Seattle, the organization and Climate Pledge Arena wanted people to feel welcome and safe, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The local hook is Washington’s two certified initiatives. The Washington Secretary of State lists IL26-001 as a parental-rights measure and IL26-638 as a proposal concerning athletics at K-12 schools. The official initiative text says IL26-638 would bar students it defines as biologically male from female-only school sports and require healthcare-provider verification of biological sex.
The Debate Is Bigger Than One WNBA Locker Room
The Seattle confrontation also arrived weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld state laws barring transgender girls and women from school athletic teams in Idaho and West Virginia. The Associated Press reported that the court’s majority said such bans do not violate Title IX, while disputes involving states with transgender-inclusive policies remain unresolved.
For the Fever, the immediate answer was basketball: a road win over Seattle. The organization’s decision to keep Cunningham and Clark away from postgame questions, however, left unanswered whether the franchise agrees with Cunningham’s public position or simply wants to keep a political fight from swallowing the season.
