A man was found dead Friday on Indianapolis' near south side after police say he was shot while sitting in a car, then crashed as he tried to get away. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene after the vehicle hit an electrical transformer and then barreled into a line of trees.
Crash and Shooting Near Henslow Lane
IMPD officers were called to an apartment complex on Henslow Lane near Shelby Street on a report of a person shot. When they arrived, they found a man in the front seat of a car with a gunshot wound. Investigators say the vehicle first struck an electrical transformer before plowing into a tree line, according to FOX59.
Neighbors Describe Barrage of Gunfire
People living at the complex said they did not notice any argument or disturbance before the chaos but suddenly heard what sounded like a barrage of gunfire. One neighbor told FOX59, "somebody shot somebody and he jumped in his car to get away," while another resident labeled the violence "ridiculous."
IMPD: Investigation Ongoing
IMPD Capt. Don Weilhammer said detectives currently believe the shooting was an isolated incident involving the man in the car and another person or group of people. Officers described the initial 911 report as sparse, and the Marion County Coroner's Office has not yet released the victim's name as authorities work to notify next of kin.
