A quiet northside morning in Indianapolis was interrupted Wednesday when a 16-year-old boy was shot near the Monon Trail, sending police rushing into the Meridian‑Kessler neighborhood and leaving residents waking up to crime scene tape instead of joggers and dog walkers.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials say the teen was found with a gunshot wound and taken to a hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. The shooting briefly brought a heavy law enforcement presence to the 64th Street corridor as officers locked down the area and started asking questions.
Police response and victim condition
According to WISH-TV, officers were dispatched around 7:23 a.m. to the 900 block of East 64th Street. When they arrived, they found the 16-year-old wounded and arranged transport to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
IMPD told WISH-TV that the teen was uncooperative with investigators at the scene, which does not exactly make solving the case any easier for detectives trying to sort out what happened and why.
Monon Trail and the neighborhood
The Monon Trail slices through a string of north-side neighborhoods, including Meridian‑Kessler and Broad Ripple, and is a heavily used route for walkers and cyclists, according to Wikipedia. IMPD says the shooting remains under investigation and has not released any information about possible suspects or a motive, per WISH-TV. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood in the hours after the call, working the usual playbook of knocking on doors, looking for surveillance video and trying to develop leads in a case where the victim is not yet talking.
