Residents in parts of Pembroke Pines and nearby Broward communities should expect an unusual pre-dawn visitor this weekend: mosquito-control aircraft making repeated passes overhead as officials respond to a spike in mosquito activity.
The overnight aerial spraying is scheduled from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. each night between Saturday and Tuesday, weather permitting, according to a City of Pembroke Pines update.
Aircraft Will Operate Before Sunrise
Broward County's standard response procedures describe aerial spraying as a nighttime tool used when ground treatments are not enough to control mosquito populations. The county operates a broader mosquito-management program that also includes inspections, larvicide and truck-mounted spraying.
The latest notice does not identify every neighborhood included in the treatment area, instead referring to portions of Pembroke Pines and surrounding communities. A similar operation in June covered western Pembroke Pines and parts of Miramar, Davie, Southwest Ranches and Weston after increased service requests and elevated mosquito surveillance, according to Pembroke Pines News.
What Residents Should Know About The Spray
Broward County says in its mosquito-control FAQ that products are applied according to their labels and should not affect pets, while still recommending that residents bring outdoor animals inside during scheduled spraying. People with breathing difficulties were also advised to remain indoors during a comparable June operation.
The county has relied on similar aerial missions in western Broward during recent mosquito surges, including a 2025 operation targeting aggressive saltmarsh mosquitoes, as a similar 2025 operation showed. The flights are part of the annual South Florida battle against mosquitoes that can multiply rapidly after rain and standing water accumulate.
Residents can help by emptying water from buckets, flowerpots, gutters and other containers around their properties. Broward County also accepts mosquito complaints and service requests through 311 or its mosquito-control program.
