A Tuesday afternoon ride at a rural intersection outside Alexandria ended in tragedy when a car turned into the path of a motorcycle, killing the rider and badly injuring a juvenile passenger, authorities said. Emergency crews pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene, and the young passenger was rushed to an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries. The car's driver was not hurt, remained at the scene and was reported to be cooperating with investigators.
According to WTHR, the Madison County Sheriff's Office identified the motorcyclist as 33-year-old Matthew Scott Doud of Summitville. Deputies said the collision happened at the intersection of Summitville Road and County Road 100 East, near the junction with State Roads 9 and 28, when a vehicle entered the intersection and failed to yield to a motorcycle traveling north. Medics pronounced Doud dead at the scene, and the juvenile passenger sustained major injuries and was transported to Indianapolis for treatment. The sheriff's office reported that the driver of the other vehicle was uninjured and stayed on scene to work with investigators.
Growing toll for motorcyclists
Motorcyclists have been making up a larger share of traffic deaths across the country in recent years. In 2023, 6,335 motorcyclists were killed nationwide, accounting for about 15% of all traffic fatalities, according to NHTSA. Safety experts note that riders face a much higher risk per mile than people in passenger vehicles, and that rural intersections can be especially hazardous when drivers misjudge distances or fail to yield.
Investigation underway
The Madison County Sheriff's Office said the crash remains under investigation and that investigators will review the scene, as well as any available footage or witness statements, to determine what factors contributed to the wreck, according to WTHR. No charges have been announced, and officials have not released further information about the juvenile passenger's condition. Authorities typically wait for crash reconstruction work and, when applicable, toxicology results before making any determinations about fault.
