A South Side gas station took a hit before dawn Thursday when a black SUV was used to smash into the business in what Chicago police described as an attempted crash-and-grab. The suspects got inside, but the break-in ended with damage and no stolen goods reported.
The incident unfolded at about 4:09 a.m. in the 8600 block of South Jeffery Boulevard, according to ABC7 Chicago. Police said the suspects used a black SUV to hit the gas station, entered the business, and were unable to take anything before fleeing in an unknown direction. The SUV was left at the scene, and Area Two detectives are investigating.
Crash-and-grab crews have hit Chicago gas stations repeatedly
The tactic has surfaced in several Chicago neighborhoods this spring and summer. CBS Chicago reported an ATM stolen from an Uptown gas station in April, while FOX 32 Chicago reported a similar ATM theft at a Bronzeville station in May.
A separate attempted crash-and-grab at a South Shore gas station in May also unfolded along Jeffery Boulevard, this time in the 7600 block. The station owner told Hoodline that the business had already faced three or four attempted break-ins.
The initial report did not identify the suspects or announce any arrests in Thursday's case. Investigators were continuing to work the scene and determine who was behind the failed burglary, according to ABC7 Chicago.
