
A 26-year-old man was found mortally wounded by gunfire Tuesday evening in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. Officers discovered him near the street in the 900 block of West 54th Street, and he was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
What police say happened
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago police said the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was found at about 6:50 p.m. Police told the paper there were no arrests and that detectives had opened an investigation.
Recent violence in the area
Back of the Yards has seen several shootings in recent weeks, including a mass attack in early June that left two people dead and five injured, according to NBC Chicago. That coverage also cited city police data showing shooting victims rose even as homicides dipped in May.
Investigation status
Police did not immediately release the victim's name or further details about a motive or suspect, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not announced any arrests as detectives continue to examine the scene.
