
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models, is facing a new kind of scrutiny: a federal patent fight with the University of Tennessee.
The University of Tennessee Research Foundation filed a federal lawsuit against Anthropic on Tuesday, accusing the AI firm of using patented neural-network technology developed at the university without permission. The complaint, lodged in U.S. District Court in Delaware, asks a judge for unspecified monetary damages and an order blocking further use of the inventions. The filing is believed to be the first patent-infringement case brought against Anthropic.
As reported by Knoxville News Sentinel, the foundation says the suit targets two patents invented by University of Tennessee professors and covering methods the school describes as "significant contributions" to artificial intelligence, machine learning, neuromorphic computing and neuroscience-inspired computing. The complaint names Anthropic PBC as the defendant and alleges the company incorporated the protected methods into its systems without authorization. The filing was submitted Monday and made public Tuesday.
A Reuters dispatch republished by Fidelity quotes the complaint as saying, "Anthropic's cavalier approach to others' intellectual property rights in the development of its products extends beyond the use of copyrighted material," and notes that the university is seeking an unspecified amount in damages along with injunctive relief. Spokespeople for both Anthropic and the university did not immediately respond to requests for comment, the dispatch said.
