A 22-year-old man was rushed to the hospital in serious condition early today after being shot multiple times near Colonial Square Apartments on Indianapolis's northwest side, marking the third violent shooting tied to the complex since late 2024. Officers were dispatched around 3:20 a.m. to the 5600 block of Renn Road, where they found the man suffering from gunshot wounds to his abdomen, buttocks and leg.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department dispatched officers to the block near Colonial Square Apartments after reports of gunfire, according to Fox 59. The victim was awake and breathing when police arrived, though officers had not disclosed the full extent of his injuries at the time of that initial report. Additional details about his age, condition and specific wounds were later reported by IndianapolisWatch. The shooting remains under investigation, and no suspect information has been released.
A Complex With a Troubled Recent History
Colonial Square Apartments, at 5650 Renn Lane, is a 206-unit affordable housing community built in 1972 and acquired by the Glick Housing Foundation in 2013, which markets it as subsidized and middle-income family housing near High School Road and I-465, per the foundation's own description of the property. That wasn't the first time Colonial Square found itself connected to gunfire spilling over from elsewhere. In November 2024, a shooting that spanned roughly three miles across multiple apartment complexes on Indy's northwest side left a third wounded victim located at Colonial Square, with the initial gunfire having begun at Lakeside Crossing at Eagle Creek apartments before spreading to the Renn Road property.

The renewed violence at Colonial Square comes even as Indianapolis has seen broad improvement in its violent crime statistics. IMPD reported in August that citywide homicides decreased by 20% and non-fatal shootings dropped 33% to 139 incidents during the first half of the year compared to the same period in previous years, a trend police attribute to targeted patrols and community safety initiatives.
