A fire tore through the attic of the Diplomat Apartments last night, forcing 55 residents from 20 units as crews evacuated the building and fought the flames. The blaze was contained quickly, but the building’s residents were left displaced after a dramatic overnight response.
911 callers initially reported a kitchen fire in apartment B25, a third-floor unit. Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke and fire in the attic, prompting Indianapolis Fire Department command to order a second alarm at 8:57 p.m., according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

Crews Evacuated The Building In 15 Minutes
IFD said the entire building was evacuated within 15 minutes while firefighters continued working on the fire. Crews brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes, according to the department’s account.
Multiple animals were also rescued from the apartments. The department’s update did not identify the animals or say whether anyone was injured.
Residents From 20 Units Were Displaced
The fire displaced 40 adults and 15 children living at the Diplomat Apartments. The update did not say how many units were damaged or whether the building remains habitable.
Officials also had not released a cause for the fire in the initial update. The investigation and any information about temporary housing or other assistance may follow as residents begin dealing with the aftermath.
