A 24-year-old man was shot in the chest and left in critical condition Thursday afternoon after gunfire erupted in the 600 block of North Spaulding Avenue in Humboldt Park. Chicago police say the man was found around 1:30 p.m. and rushed to a hospital, and as of the latest update, no one has been taken into custody.
According to Chicago Sun-Times, the man was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was stabilized after arriving in critical condition, per Chicago police. The 600 block of North Spaulding Avenue falls within the Chicago Police Department's 11th District, known as Harrison, which patrols West Side communities including Humboldt Park, Garfield Park, North Lawndale, and Austin, according to the Chicago Police Department. Violent crime cases in the area are typically handled by Area 4 Detectives, who oversee investigations across police districts 10, 11, and 15 on the West Side, per the ACLU of Illinois.
Stroger's Role as a Regional Trauma Hub
Stroger Hospital, located at 1901 W. Harrison St., houses Illinois' busiest Level 1 trauma center, treating roughly 120,000 emergency adult and pediatric cases each year, according to Cook County Health. That capacity is part of why critically wounded shooting victims from across the West Side, including this latest case, are routinely brought there for emergency care. Investigators have not released details on a possible motive, and it remains unclear whether the man was targeted or caught in unrelated crossfire.
A Pattern of Summer Violence in Humboldt Park
Thursday's shooting adds to a string of gun violence incidents that have rattled Humboldt Park this summer. In July, a street gathering near Central Park Avenue and Iowa Street erupted into gunfire that wounded six people in a single incident investigated by Area 4 detectives, as documented in a post shared by ABC7 Chicago on Facebook. That same month, a sidewalk dispute in the 3900 block of West Division Street left three people shot and hospitalized, a case Hoodline previously reported.
In June, a daylight street fight at Chicago and Homan avenues turned deadly when a 36-year-old woman was fatally shot in the chest, with a 27-year-old suspect detained at the scene, according to police reports cited by CBS Chicago. And in May, Chicago police arrested a 23-year-old suburban resident on aggravated battery with a firearm charges after a Humboldt Park shooting wounded a 46-year-old bystander, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago. Even further back, a fatal shooting followed a roadside altercation in the 1700 block of North Spaulding Avenue in May 2025, when a man died at Stroger Hospital after being shot multiple times inside his car.
What Charges Could Follow an Arrest
If Chicago police identify and arrest a suspect, the case could carry severe legal consequences. Under Illinois law, discharging a firearm and injuring another person constitutes aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony that carries a mandatory sentence of 12 to 30 years in state prison with no eligibility for probation, according to Combs Waterkotte. No charges have been filed in connection with Thursday's shooting, and no arrest has been made.
Chicago police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Residents can submit anonymous tips by texting “CPDTip” to 738477 or by filing a report online through CPDTIP.com, per the Chicago Police Department. It remains unknown whether investigators have recovered surveillance footage from nearby homes along Spaulding Avenue that could help identify a shooter.
