A 29-year-old man was left in critical condition after being shot near a sidewalk along the 700 block of North Ridgeway Avenue in Humboldt Park, according to police. No suspects were in custody as of the latest report, and Chicago police were investigating the shooting.
Police said the man was struck in the buttocks during the shooting, which happened Saturday, August 29, on the 700 block of North Ridgeway Avenue, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was reported in critical condition. Mount Sinai, located at 15th Street and California Avenue, is an adult Level 1 Trauma Center that treats roughly 2,000 trauma victims a year, making it one of the primary safety-net facilities for West Side shooting victims, according to Rush University Medical Center.
A Block With a Violent History
The 700 block of North Ridgeway Avenue falls within the Chicago Police Department's 11th District, known as the Harrison District, which covers Humboldt Park along with West Garfield Park and East Garfield Park, according to the Chicago Police Department. This same stretch of Ridgeway has seen repeated gunfire over the years. In December 2022, two men, ages 32 and 19, were wounded there in a drive-by shooting when occupants of a passing SUV opened fire on pedestrians, per CBS Chicago. Both survived after being taken to Mount Sinai.
The block's history goes back further still. In August 2021, a 26-year-old man was killed after being struck in the head and buttocks during a morning shooting there, and a 55-year-old man was fatally shot on the same block in June 2016, according to WTTW News.
Part of a Broader Cluster of Gunfire
Saturday's shooting adds to a tight cluster of critical gun violence in Humboldt Park this month. Earlier in August, a 24-year-old man was left in critical condition after being shot in the 600 block of North Spaulding Avenue, just two blocks east of Ridgeway, and was rushed to Stroger Hospital, as Hoodline reported in coverage from earlier this month. That followed other recent shootings in the neighborhood, including a daylight parking lot shooting that left three men wounded and a car sprayed with gunfire on Hirsch Street that left a teen passenger wounded.
Citywide, shooting incidents in Chicago rose roughly 4% year-over-year through June 2026, reaching 686 shootings and 858 shooting victims, even as property crime and robberies declined, according to Chicago Police Department statistics cited by WTTW News. June alone recorded 139 shootings and 43 homicides across the city.
Low Odds of an Arrest, but Outreach Continues
Violent crime investigations in the 11th District are handled by CPD Area 4 Detectives, who oversee felony and violent crime cases across West Side police districts 10, 11, and 15, including Humboldt Park, Garfield Park, and Austin. Their task in cases like this one is often difficult: University of Chicago Crime Lab research shows that only about 9% of non-fatal shootings in Chicago result in an arrest and criminal charges when no suspect is caught at the scene.
If a suspect is eventually identified and arrested, Illinois law classifies shooting and injuring another person as aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony carrying a mandatory prison sentence of 6 to 30 years without the possibility of probation under 720 ILCS 5/12-3.05. Humboldt Park remains an active zone for Chicago's Community Violence Intervention network and hospital-based programs like Healing Hurt People-Chicago, which send outreach workers into trauma centers to mediate disputes and counsel injured victims in hopes of preventing retaliatory violence.
