Indianapolis gets a bright, warm start Wednesday, but the sunshine has a deadline. Temperatures should climb to about 85 degrees before showers and thunderstorms move in during the evening, with some storms potentially becoming severe.
Storms Arrive After Dark
Mostly sunny skies will hold through the afternoon, with south-southwest winds between 2 and 8 mph. The National Weather Service's Indianapolis office expects storm chances to increase after about 8 p.m. as a front moves through the area.
Showers and thunderstorms could continue into the early overnight hours, with a 50% chance of precipitation and rainfall totals between a tenth and a quarter of an inch. Temperatures will dip to around 65 degrees before edging upward overnight, and no watches, warnings or advisories are currently in effect.
The timing marks a sharper storm threat than Hoodline's earlier outlook, which had called for only a slight chance of Wednesday-evening storms.
Sunny, Comfortable Stretch Follows
Thursday should bring mostly sunny skies and a high near 82 degrees, followed by a sunny Friday with another high around 82. Saturday looks similarly pleasant, with sunshine and a high near 83 under light southeast winds.
The heat rebuilds Sunday, when Indianapolis could reach 88 degrees, then peaks near 91 Monday and 90 Tuesday. The late-week calm should give way to warmer, more humid conditions early next week, with small chances for afternoon or evening storms on Monday and Tuesday.
For Wednesday plans, the practical move is to enjoy the afternoon outdoors but have a way to get inside before storms develop after sunset. Anyone caught outside during thunder should move indoors and check updated forecasts as the evening approaches.
