A man was shot and killed at a motel on Indianapolis' east side Monday evening, and police were still working to determine whether the killing was connected to a second shooting that happened just minutes earlier and less than two miles away. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers responded to the 6800 block of East 21st Street around 7:37 p.m. and found a person suffering from a gunshot wound who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting happened at the Budget 8 Inn motel at 6850 E. 21st St., near Shadeland Avenue, according to WTHR. As reported by Fox 59, IMPD detained a person at the scene, though that individual's role in the shooting remains unclear. Officers had received reports of a shooting in the area of the 6800 block of East 21st Street before arriving to find the victim already down.
Just a few minutes before the fatal shooting, IMPD had responded to a separate shooting at the 5800 block of Village Plaza South Drive, where a man was found in critical condition, per Fox 59's reporting. That location sits less than two miles from the East 21st Street scene, and it remains an open question whether investigators will link the two incidents or treat them as unrelated events.
A Motel With a Violent History
Monday's homicide was not the first act of gun violence tied to the Budget 8 Inn. WTHR's reporting notes that the same address has been the site of multiple shootings in recent years, including the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Joshua Thompson in May and the June 2023 homicide of Kenneth Barnett. The recurring violence at the property underscores the kind of localized hot spot that continues to draw heavy attention from patrol officers even as citywide numbers trend downward.
Both shooting locations from Monday night fall within IMPD's East District, which is headquartered less than two miles away at 201 North Shadeland Avenue and staffs roughly 200 officers, Hoodline has previously reported. The district covers the city's east side, bounded roughly by 30th Street to the north and Washington Street to the south, putting substantial police resources within close reach of both scenes.
How Indianapolis' Violent Crime Numbers Compare
Monday's double shooting arrives even as Indianapolis has posted significant multi-year reductions in fatal violence. WFYI data cited by Hoodline shows criminal homicides in the city fell to 133 in 2025, a roughly 45 percent drop from the 2021 peak of 241 homicides. Preliminary public safety figures released by IMPD, as reported by WISH-TV, similarly pointed to a 20 percent decrease in citywide homicides and a 33 percent reduction in non-fatal shootings through late 2025 and into 2026.
Not every trend line is moving in the same direction, however. IMPD Chief Tanya Terry told the City-County Council that while overall homicides and non-fatal shootings fell more than 20 percent in early 2026, the share of juvenile homicide victims in Indianapolis actually rose by nearly 4 percent during the first quarter of the year. That regional decline broadly tracks with peer cities as well — violent crime data collected by the Major Cities Chiefs Association and reported by Mirror Indy showed Indianapolis homicides falling by roughly 30 percent, mirroring broader drops seen across major Midwestern police jurisdictions.
Recent East Side Enforcement
IMPD's East District has stayed active in recent weeks. Homicide detectives executed a search warrant following a July 18 shooting on East Gifford Avenue, arresting a 19-year-old man on a murder charge and recovering a large stash of illegal firearms and narcotics, according to Hoodline's earlier coverage of that case. Just one day before Monday's shootings, another East Side hotel shooting on Shadeland Avenue left a victim in critical condition at a site tied to a 2021 double murder.
No charges have been announced in connection with Monday's fatal shooting at the Budget 8 Inn, and the condition of the man wounded on Village Plaza South Drive has not been released.
