Miami is starting Sunday mostly clear and already warm, but the bigger story arrives by late morning: a Heat Advisory will cover the city as humidity pushes the heat index as high as 110 degrees. The National Weather Service expects a mostly sunny day with a high near 91 and southeast winds around 6 to 10 mph.
Heat Advisory Runs Through Sunday Evening
The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, August 16. Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, drink plenty of water and take regular breaks in air conditioning or shade.
Miami-Dade County maintains a list of public cooling sites, including libraries, parks and government facilities. County officials also advise checking on older adults, children, neighbors and anyone working or exercising outdoors during the hottest part of the day.
More Heat Before Storm Chances Increase
Sunday night should stay mostly clear with a low near 82, though the heat index could remain as high as 102. Monday looks much the same: sunny, near 92 degrees, with heat index values around 106 and only a small chance of rain.
A few showers and thunderstorms become more possible Tuesday afternoon, with a 20% chance of rain, followed by 30% chances Wednesday and Thursday. Friday carries a 40% chance of afternoon storms, but temperatures will still hover around 92 degrees, so a passing downpour may offer only a temporary break from the heat.
Know The Warning Signs
Heat exhaustion can bring heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea or headache. Confusion, fainting or hot, dry skin can signal heat stroke, which is a medical emergency; call 911 and move the person to a cooler place while waiting for help.
