A 63-year-old Miami man has been sentenced to 27 years in federal prison after prosecutors said he repeatedly paid a 14-year-old in Cuba to create sexually explicit videos for him. The punishment follows a case that moved from online messages abroad to a phone search at Miami International Airport.
Ariel Espinosa pleaded guilty to attempted production and transportation of child sexual abuse material, according to NBC 6 South Florida. A federal judge sentenced him to 324 months, or 27 years, in prison after prosecutors said he knew the teen was underage and directed the child to make material for his gratification.
The case came into focus when Espinosa returned to the United States in August 2025 on a flight from Holguín, Cuba. Officials found hundreds of images and videos of child sexual abuse material on his phone, along with communications showing repeated requests to the teen, the NBC report said; U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones called the conduct “calculated, exploitative, and profoundly cruel.”
The Digital Trail Began In Cuba
According to the account released by prosecutors, Espinosa used payments and repeated instructions to get the 14-year-old to produce sexually explicit videos. The evidence described publicly did not depend on a face-to-face encounter in Miami; the alleged exploitation was documented through messages and files recovered when Espinosa crossed through the airport.
A Broader South Florida Federal Pattern
Espinosa’s sentence comes amid other South Florida federal cases involving adults who used online communications, money, or international travel to target minors overseas. In May, the Southern District of Florida announced a 30-year sentence for a Tennessee man who paid a 14-year-old in Colombia to create sexually explicit videos and then traveled there to exploit her.
The cases are separate, but the sentencing outcomes show how federal prosecutors are pursuing cross-border child exploitation cases even when the victim is outside the United States. Online messages, electronic payments, travel records, and digital files can turn conduct that began overseas into a federal case handled in South Florida.

Espinosa’s guilty plea resolved the case on attempted production and transportation charges involving child sexual abuse material.
