A suspected smuggling boat carrying 21 migrants was intercepted near San Clemente Island last Wednesday, but the operation turned into a medical emergency when a 56-year-old passenger was found unresponsive and later died at a Westwood hospital.
Federal crews moved in around noon after a good Samaritan reported the vessel, with Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations responding. A Coast Guard boat crew located the vessel, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Authorities began performing CPR on the man before a Coast Guard Station Ventura MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was diverted for a medical evacuation. The aircrew hoisted him and continued CPR while flying him to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where medical personnel restored his pulse before he later died.
The other 20 people aboard were detained and turned over to U.S. Border Patrol personnel. The available report does not identify the vessel operator, disclose the passengers’ nationalities or announce charges connected to the crossing.
San Clemente Island Remains A Busy Interdiction Zone
The fatal rescue comes after repeated maritime interdictions in the same broad stretch of ocean. In January, Coast Guard members stopped a panga carrying 15 suspected migrants about 24 miles southwest of San Clemente Island and transferred them to another Department of Homeland Security agency at Ballast Point, according to an official Coast Guard release; Hoodline covered that January case at the time.
Another major case surfaced in April, when the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California said 29 Mexican nationals were arrested aboard a panga about 10 miles south of San Nicolas Island. Federal prosecutors filed immigration-related complaints in that case, while noting that complaints are allegations and that defendants are presumed innocent, according to the Department of Justice.
A Dangerous Route With A Recent Fatal Record
The risks are not limited to arrests or rough crossings. In May 2025, a panga carrying migrants capsized near Del Mar, killing four people, including two children, and prompting charges against several alleged smugglers, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The San Clemente Island case adds another death to a maritime smuggling pattern that has repeatedly required Coast Guard crews to shift from enforcement to emergency rescue. For now, officials have released no further details about the deceased passenger or what will happen to the 20 people taken into Border Patrol custody.
