Millcreek Common is about to turn its skate loop into a moving cultural block party, with Pacific Islander food, music, performances and family activities all packed into one free night. The annual celebration arrives this Saturday as part of Utah’s Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Now in its fourth year, the event will feature cultural performances from Malialole Dance Group and Tausala Productions, music from DJ Fuidawg, and skate demonstrations and interactive fun from Skate Loop Legends, according to ABC4 Utah. Big Buddah is hosting the evening, which is expected to draw attendees from across the region and beyond the Pacific Islander community.
The first 1,000 guests can receive free skate rentals, while Millcreek Pizza House plans to give away pizza to the first 50 people who arrive at 6 p.m., ABC4 Utah reports. Community booths, local vendors, family-friendly games and other activities will round out the skating session.
A Month Built Around Utah’s Pacific Islander History
Utah has recognized August as Pacific Islander Heritage Month since 2012, a tradition that highlights the state’s Pacific Islander communities, cultural contributions and long history. The Utah Division of Multicultural Affairs notes that Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander settlers helped establish the Iosepa settlement in Tooele County’s Skull Valley in the 19th century.
The skate night is part of a broader monthlong effort to keep that history visible through dance, music, food and community gatherings. Organizers say the event has grown into an annual tradition, with previous celebrations drawing more than 1,000 people, according to the Pacific Islander Skate Night organizers.
What To Know Before You Roll In
The free family event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Skate Loop at Millcreek Common, and the venue says both admission and skate rentals will be free. With giveaways, food and first-come perks in the mix, the evening promises a little culture, a little community connection and plenty of reasons to lace up.
