A motorcyclist was seriously injured this morning after colliding with an SUV at the intersection of Sherman Drive and Brookville Road on Indianapolis's east side. Emergency responders were dispatched to the crash scene, where the rider was transported to an area hospital with multiple fractures.
According to Fox 59, authorities reported that the crash involved a motorcycle and an SUV and caused serious bodily injury. The motorcycle driver was listed in stable condition following the collision, the outlet reported.
Under Indiana Code § 9-30-7-3, officers are required to offer a breath test or chemical test, such as a blood draw, to any driver involved in a crash causing serious bodily injury within three hours of the wreck, according to FindLaw. It remains unclear whether that testing was administered in this case, and a formal fault determination has not been released.
A Corner With A Deadly History
This isn't the first serious motorcycle wreck at this east-side corner. The same intersection was the scene of a fatal motorcycle collision in April 2020 that left one person dead and another hospitalized in critical condition, as reported at the time by WTHR.
The corridor has continued to draw scrutiny from city officials. Meeting minutes from the Indianapolis Fatal Crash Review Team show that traffic safety officials formally reviewed a serious crash on South Sherman Drive, located just 160 feet south of Brookville Road, during their January meeting this year, according to city records.
Indiana's Helmet Law And Motorcycle Fatality Numbers
It is not known from available reports whether the motorcyclist involved Monday was wearing a helmet. Under Indiana law, motorcycle drivers and passengers are only required to wear DOT-approved helmets if they are under 18 or riding under a learner's permit — the state repealed its universal helmet mandate back in 1976, according to guidance published by IN.gov.
That legal gap coincides with troubling statistics. The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute's Indiana Crash Facts 2024 report found that 136 motorcyclists were killed on Indiana roadways that year, representing 15.6% of the state's 872 total traffic fatalities despite motorcycles making up less than 2% of vehicles involved in collisions, per an analysis from Schuerman Law. The same data showed that just 37% of motorcyclists involved in Indiana crashes wore helmets in 2024, and among those killed, helmet usage dropped to only 31%.
Monday's crash also falls within what crash analysts identify as the riskiest stretch of the year for Hoosier motorcyclists. May through August represent peak months for severe and fatal motorcycle collisions statewide, per the Schuerman Law analysis, a window that coincides with higher motorcycle traffic volume and more weekend and evening intersection incidents.
City Safety Efforts Along The Corridor
The Brookville Road corridor has also been the focus of recent infrastructure spending. In May, Mayor Joe Hogsett and the Indianapolis Department of Public Works announced a $7.3 million investment to repair the deteriorating Brookville Road bridge over Shadeland Avenue on the east side, according to WFYI.
Broader safety policy is also in motion citywide. The Indianapolis City-County Council passed a Vision Zero measure in 2024 establishing a 15-member task force with the goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries on Marion County streets by 2035, according to city records. Brookville Road itself traces back to an early 19th-century settler trail along Pogue's Run, later evolving through more than a century of urban re-alignments into the commercial thoroughfare that intersects Sherman Drive today, per Indiana Transportation History.
