Last week, Church and Market neighborhood mainstay Church Street Cafe (260 Church Street) shuttered after 20 years in business.
Church Street Cafe owner Hank Lim shared the news in a goodbye message posted inside the store.
"With full hearts, we want to share that after 20 wonderful years, Church Street Cafe will be closing," wrote Lim. Church Street Cafe's last day was July 28.
"For the past 20 years, this cafe has been more than just a business to us," said Lim. "It has been a part of our lives, our family, and this community."

"Our girls grew up here, and many of you watched them grow over the years," added Lim. "Many of you have come in every day, shared your mornings with us, supported us through the years, and made this cafe feel like home."
Reflecting on two decades in the neighborhood, Lim said, "We have been through many good times and also many difficult times, including the challenges of COVID and the years that followed."
Church Street Cafe remained open for two decades on a block and in an area that has faced its share of challenges and turnover during that time. The simple, no-frills cafe Church Street Cafe also persevered during eras of branded coffee chains and artisanal coffee shops.
"Like many small businesses, we had to work hard to survive and keep going," added Lim. "Through it all, so many of you stayed loyal to us, continued to support us, and reminded us why this place was so special."

"We are truly grateful for every smile, conversation, cup of coffee, meal, and memory," said Lim. "Your kindness and loyalty have meant more to us than words can fully express. Thank you for allowing us to serve you and be part of your daily life. We will always remember the friendships, support, and memories made here. Thank you for 20 unforgettable years."
While Church Street Cafe has closed, Lim said, "This is not goodbye forever." Lim will be opening a new bagel shop in the Montclair neighborhood of Oakland later this fall.
"We hope to see many familiar faces again when we are ready to welcome customers," said Lim.
