A 54-year-old Port St. Lucie man is facing felony charges after police say a road rage confrontation on U.S. Highway 1 spiraled into a four-vehicle crash that left a motorcyclist with a brain bleed and facial fractures. Kevin Lonergan was arrested following the wreck, which happened Wednesday night at the intersection of South U.S. Highway 1 and SE Lyngate Drive/SE Tiffany Avenue in Port St. Lucie.
According to WPBF, a red Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a black Ford Super Duty pickup truck were both traveling northbound on U.S. 1 when the confrontation unfolded. Investigators say the motorcycle rider entered the intersection against a red light, and Lonergan then drove the pickup through the same red light behind him. The Ford struck the motorcycle rider before crashing head-on into a blue Toyota RAV4, while the motorcycle itself collided with a black Chevrolet Silverado.
Rider Ejected, Loses Consciousness
The impact ejected the motorcycle rider, a 31-year-old man, who lost consciousness after the crash, per the same report. He and two occupants of the Toyota RAV4 were taken to Lawnwood Medical Center, while the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was transported to St. Lucie Medical Center, located directly at the crash site on SE Tiffany Avenue. St. Lucie Medical Center is a 229-bed acute care facility with a 24/7 emergency department, according to Medicare facility records.
The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries including a brain bleed and facial fractures and remains hospitalized in stable condition, the outlet's report notes. Lawnwood Medical Center, formally known as HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, operates as the only Level II Trauma Center serving the four-county Treasure Coast region of St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin, and Okeechobee counties, according to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, with 24/7 specialized trauma surgical teams equipped to handle severe brain and facial injuries.
Charges Filed After Investigation
Port St. Lucie police identified Lonergan as the driver of the Ford pickup and, following their investigation, arrested him on two counts of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and one count of reckless driving causing injury. He was booked into St. Lucie County Jail after being medically cleared, per the report.
Under Florida Statute § 316.192(3)(c)(2), reckless driving causing serious bodily injury is a third-degree felony carrying up to five years in state prison and a $5,000 fine per count, according to Florida's Online Sunshine statutes database. The same statute defines “serious bodily injury” as a condition creating a substantial risk of death, serious disfigurement, or protracted loss or impairment of a bodily function or organ — a threshold prosecutors will need to establish given the motorcyclist's brain bleed and facial fractures.
Scene Closed for Hours as Crews Investigated
The intersection remained closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene, with all lanes reopening at approximately 2 a.m. Thursday, police said. The crash remains under investigation, according to police.
The intersection sits along a stretch of U.S. 1 that feeds directly into Port St. Lucie's U.S. 1 Community Redevelopment Area and connects to the Crosstown Parkway corridor, an urban transit zone that city officials have targeted for complete-streets traffic safety upgrades, according to the City of Port St. Lucie. The Port St. Lucie Police Department also uses a computer-mapped statistical tracking system called STARCOM, modeled after NYPD's CompStat program, to monitor crash trends and target high-risk roadways for enforcement.
Part of a Rising Statewide Trend
This crash lands amid a sharp statewide rise in aggressive driving violence. Fatal crashes involving road rage in Florida surged 200% from 2023 to 2024, climbing from 12 deaths to 36, according to an analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data reported by The Boca Raton Tribune. Florida also ranked tenth nationally for aggressive driving danger in a 2026 study of five-year NHTSA crash data, posting a road rage crash rate of 0.09 per 100,000 residents.
Port St. Lucie has seen its own share of violent road rage incidents in recent months. In April, police investigated a road rage confrontation that began locally before escalating along regional highways into the fatal shooting of a FedEx driver in Riviera Beach. Whether traffic camera footage or witness testimony will clarify how Wednesday's pursuit began before both vehicles ran the red light remains an open question for investigators.
