Two people were injured, and a cat died after a predawn fire consumed a Sandy home Monday, leaving the house a total loss. One of the injured residents had helped a wheelchair user escape, then went back inside in a desperate attempt to save a pet.
The fire began around 2:20 a.m. near 8800 South and 300 East, according to Sandy Deputy Fire Chief Chris Aston, as reported by KSL News. Two people were inside, and firefighters spent about an hour and a half fighting the flames before the home was declared destroyed.
One resident used a wheelchair and was helped out safely by the other person. That helper then reentered the burning home to rescue a pet and was injured; one of the injured residents was taken to the University of Utah Burn Center. One cat died in the fire.

Officials had not determined what started the fire as of Monday. No further details about the injured residents' conditions were immediately released.
