A probation check on the 200 block of South Park Street in Seymour turned into a major drug bust this week, after officers say they found more than 400 grams of methamphetamine hidden at the address. Thomas Murray, 38, of Seymour, was arrested and now faces charges that could send him to prison for decades, including a Level 2 felony count of dealing methamphetamine.
According to the Seymour Police Department, the Seymour Narcotics Division and Detective Division assisted Jackson County Probation Officers with a probationary search at the South Park Street address on Tuesday, August 4, at approximately 11:55 a.m. Probation officers located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia during that initial search, the department said. That discovery is what allows probation officers to enter a monitored residence without first securing a warrant — Indiana courts have held that people on probation agree to search conditions that lower their expectation of privacy, permitting these visits within the regulatory scheme of supervision, according to Justia Law.
Once the initial paraphernalia and drugs turned up, authorities paused to obtain a formal search warrant for the location before digging further. That search turned up additional methamphetamine and paraphernalia, ultimately totaling more than 400 grams of methamphetamine, which police estimated carries a street value exceeding $3,000, per the department's Facebook statement.
Charges Carry Decades of Prison Exposure
Murray was arrested on charges of dealing methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine, both Level 2 felonies, along with maintaining a common nuisance, a Level 6 felony, and possession of paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor. Seymour Police Lieutenant Michael Cooper is listed in connection with the case.
The scale of the seizure is notable under Indiana law. Indiana Code § 35-48-4-1.1 sets the threshold for the state's top drug-dealing felony tier at 28 grams or more — meaning the amount found on South Park Street exceeds that threshold by more than 14 times, according to Justia Law. A Level 2 felony conviction in Indiana carries a prison sentence of 10 to 30 years, an advisory sentence of 17.5 years, and a fine of up to $10,000, per state sentencing statutes outlined by IN.gov.
The common nuisance charge against Murray, filed under Indiana Code § 35-45-1-5, applies when someone knowingly maintains a building or structure used for keeping or selling controlled substances, according to the Indiana General Assembly. That Level 6 felony carries a fixed sentence between six months and 2.5 years, with an advisory sentence of one year, per IN.gov. The misdemeanor paraphernalia charge, meanwhile, carries a maximum of one year in county jail and a $5,000 fine under Indiana Code § 35-50-3-2, according to Banks & Brower.
Second Major Meth Bust in Seymour This Summer
This is not the only large-scale methamphetamine seizure Seymour Police have announced this summer. On June 10, Seymour Police and federal agents seized over five pounds of meth worth $20,000 during a search warrant execution on Noble Street. That earlier raid involved multi-agency support from the DEA and local county narcotics teams.
Seymour, a city of roughly 22,500 residents sitting at the crossroads of Interstate 65 and U.S. Route 50, has become a focus area for regional narcotics enforcement given its position as a major transit junction, according to World Population Review. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and local police routinely conduct joint probation searches and narcotics operations across the county, a standard tactic for uncovering illicit activity at monitored addresses.
Murray is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law, and formal charging decisions rest with the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office. Individuals arrested on felony charges in Seymour are typically booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown, an adult detention facility with a capacity of approximately 144 to 198 inmates.
