A driver crashed into a Florida Highway Patrol vehicle near the intersection of North Jog Road and Beeline Highway in West Palm Beach on Thursday afternoon, triggering an immediate manhunt as deputies and local police fanned out to find the suspect. The crash happened around 4:46 p.m., according to Florida 511, and left the roadway completely blocked while law enforcement responded.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is assisting the Florida Highway Patrol in the search for the suspect, while the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department is also aiding the effort, according to WPEC. Deputies were still working to locate the person responsible for the crash as of Thursday evening, and the outlet described the situation as a developing story with updates expected as more information becomes available.
A Work Zone Already Under Pressure
The crash site sits in the middle of an active construction corridor. State Road 710, better known as Beeline Highway, is currently the subject of a $148.2 million reconstruction project spanning 3.14 miles from Northlake Boulevard to Blue Heron Boulevard, according to FDOT District 4. That project, which is widening the road from four to six lanes and replacing the Florida's Turnpike bridge over SR 710, is not expected to wrap up until late 2029.
On top of the long-term rebuild, the City of West Palm Beach notes that active maintenance work requires daily weekday lane closures along Beeline Highway at the Jog Road intersection, restricting traffic to a single inside lane in each direction between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Nearby, Florida's Turnpike Enterprise is also executing a separate mainline widening project along SR 91 between Beeline Highway and PGA Boulevard, a plan that includes replacing overpass bridges at the Jog Road interchange.
What Charges the Suspect Could Face
If identified and captured, the driver could face serious criminal exposure. Fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer in a marked patrol vehicle with active lights and sirens is a felony under Florida Statute § 316.1935, carrying a mandatory driver's license revocation of one to five years, according to Demmery Law, PLLC. Florida law also bars judges from withholding adjudication of guilt upon conviction for that offense.
Separately, leaving the scene of an accident involving only property damage is a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days in jail under Florida Statutes § 316.061 and § 316.062, per Musca Law. But if the crash caused personal injury, fleeing the scene becomes a felony under § 316.027, a distinction that could shape how prosecutors ultimately charge the case once the suspect is found.
Part of a Rough Month for Jog Road
Thursday's crash adds to a string of serious incidents along the Jog Road corridor this month. On August 15, a fatal crash near Lantana Road killed a driver, and on August 23, a head-on collision at Southern Boulevard left two motorists critically injured, according to BocaNewsNow.com. The corridor's troubles aren't limited to crashes. Hoodline also reported earlier this month on an arrest made seven months after a hit-and-run driver struck and killed a pedestrian in a Jog Road crosswalk, underscoring how often fleeing drivers factor into the area's most serious incidents.
A Statewide Pattern of Fleeing Drivers
Thursday's manhunt fits into a broader statewide trend. Florida recorded 92,381 hit-and-run collisions in 2025, accounting for roughly a quarter of all motor vehicle accidents statewide, according to data compiled by Swope, Rodante PA. Even so, total crashes across Florida fell 4% from 381,423 in 2024 to 366,300 in 2025, while hit-and-run fatalities dropped 25.6%, from 242 deaths in 2024 to 180 in 2025.
North Jog Road itself was originally built as a 0.7-mile extension connecting Beeline Highway to Northlake Boulevard to improve regional arterial connectivity in northern Palm Beach County, according to WGI Inc. That connector role means the intersection carries heavy through-traffic even without construction, a factor likely compounding the disruption from Thursday's crash and the search that followed. No further details on the suspect's identity or condition have been released as the search continues.
