A Monday-night crash in Monroe County left one driver dead and three other people injured, including one passenger who was flown to an Indianapolis hospital. The collision involved a Kia and a Subaru near South Fairfax Road and East Dillman Road.
At about 8:53 p.m., deputies responded to the scene, where the Kia had one occupant — a 37-year-old Bloomington man — and the Subaru carried three people, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. The Kia occupant was injured, while both Subaru passengers were hurt and the 18-year-old Campbellsburg driver was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he later died.
Major Crash Team Investigating Collision
One Subaru passenger was seriously injured and flown to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The Monroe County Major Crash Investigation Team responded and is working to determine what led to the collision.
Officials had not released additional details about the crash, including whether any citations or charges were being considered. The sheriff's office said more information will be released as it becomes available.
Fairfax Road Already Slated For Safety Work
The crash comes as Monroe County prepares safety improvements on parts of Fairfax Road. The Monroe County Highway Department says high-friction surface treatment is planned for areas with a history of run-off-the-road crashes, with construction currently scheduled for 2027.
Separately, county plans call for a future roundabout at the Old State Road 37 South and Dillman Road intersection, with design work beginning this year and construction targeted for 2028. That project is separate from Monday night's crash location, and investigators have not said whether roadway design or conditions played a role.
