Three people broke into Westfield Cafe in the early morning hours last Sunday, and investigators now say the same overnight incident also targeted the neighboring Westfield Pub. The Clark County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to come forward as it works to identify the suspects behind the break-in at the small village's central gathering spots.
The Clark County Sheriff's Office first reported the burglary in a Friday morning social media post, saying three people had broken into the Westfield Cafe, according to WTHI-TV. In an update today, the sheriff's office clarified that the early morning burglary also hit the adjacent Westfield Pub, according to the Downstate Illinois-Metro East StL Scanner, confirming the incident was a multi-business break-in rather than an isolated hit on the cafe alone.
Westfield Cafe is one of the few local dining establishments in the village, serving breakfast and lunch to the surrounding community, per AreaVibes. In a village of roughly 515 residents with a median age of 60.4, according to Census Reporter demographic projections, a burglary hitting two of the community's central businesses in one night carries outsized weight — Westfield sits about 15 miles from the county seat of Marshall, and small rural towns like it tend to lean heavily on just a handful of gathering places.
Surveillance Photo Sparks Confusion Over Getaway Vehicle
Investigators also moved to clear up confusion around a vehicle shown in surveillance images tied to the case. Police said the car pictured in the released photo is not the suspected vehicle used in the break-in, the sheriff's office confirmed to WTHI-TV, an important clarification meant to keep the public from chasing a false lead.
The Clark County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff William D. Brown, operates out of its headquarters and county detention facility at 207 N. 5th Street in Marshall, according to the county's official website. The office serves as primary law enforcement for unincorporated Clark County and for municipalities without their own police departments, including Westfield.
A Small Force Covering a Wide Rural County
That responsibility falls to a notably lean team. Illinois State Police records from 2025 show the Clark County Sheriff's Office employs just nine full-time sworn officers to cover the entire rural county, a staffing level that makes investigative tools and community tips especially valuable when property crimes occur off-hours. To help track vehicle movement across the region, the sheriff's office also uses automated license plate reader cameras from Flock Safety along local roads, per the Atlas of Surveillance.
Illinois law treats this kind of break-in as a serious offense. Under Section 19-1 of the Illinois Criminal Code, entering a commercial building without authority with intent to commit theft is charged as a Class 2 felony, carrying a potential sentence of three to seven years in state prison and fines up to $25,000, according to the Illinois General Assembly. That exposure applies regardless of whether the suspects successfully took any property, though the dossier does not indicate whether cash or goods were actually stolen from either the cafe or the pub.
