A tornado warning swept across central Indianapolis on Saturday evening, sending sirens blaring downtown and forcing Gen Con to pause as a rotating storm moved through the city. The alert covered Indianapolis, Beech Grove, Warren Park and Monument Circle during one of the busiest weekends on the local events calendar.
The National Weather Service Indianapolis issued the warning at 5:23 p.m. for central Marion County, saying a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was over Indianapolis and moving northeast at 10 mph. The warning, which was set to remain in effect until 6 p.m., cited radar-indicated rotation and included parts of Interstates 65 and 70, according to the National Weather Service Indianapolis.
The timing was especially disruptive for Gen Con, the massive tabletop gaming convention taking place downtown from July 30 through August 2. The event uses the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium and nearby hotels, with nearly 70,000 gaming enthusiasts expected to attend, according to Gen Con’s official press FAQ.
Gen Con halted activities during the warning and instructed attendees to move away from windows and exterior rooms inside the convention center. Downtown residents also received phone alerts around 5:23 p.m., while a tornado siren sounded in the city center, the Indianapolis Star reported.
Warning Focused On Downtown Indianapolis
Later warning updates described the storm as nearly stationary before it began moving northwest at roughly 5 mph. The alert remained focused on Indianapolis and Monument Circle, with the warning text continuing to describe a tornado threat based on radar-indicated rotation rather than a confirmed tornado.
Residents in the warned area were advised to take shelter in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and to stay away from windows. Indiana’s emergency preparedness guidance similarly urges people to treat a tornado warning as an immediate sheltering situation, rather than waiting to see the storm, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
