A 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were shot to death Monday evening as they left a business in the 200 block of West Pershing Road on Chicago's South Side, according to police. Both victims were rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and later died there. No arrests have been made, and investigators have not released the victims' identities.
The shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. Monday when three suspects approached the victims in a silver Nissan and opened fire as they exited the business, according to FOX 32 Chicago, which cited the Chicago Police Department. The man was struck 12 times and the woman was shot six times, per Chicago police. The station reported that the suspects fled eastbound after the attack, and no additional injuries were reported among bystanders.
Investigation Remains Open, No Suspect Details Released
Police have not released any additional information describing the three suspects or disclosed a motive for the attack, the outlet's report noted. The investigation remains ongoing, and it was not immediately clear which business the victims were leaving when they were targeted. The 200 block of West Pershing Road falls within the Chicago Police Department's 9th District, which covers Armour Square, Fuller Park and nearby South Side neighborhoods, with major violent crime cases in the area typically handled by Area One Detectives.
That stretch of Pershing Road forms the southern boundary of Wentworth Gardens, a 344-unit Chicago Housing Authority complex built in 1944, according to Wikipedia. Both victims were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, which has served as the South Side's only Level 1 Adult Trauma Center since it reopened adult trauma care in May 2018 after years of community advocacy against what officials had called a decades-long “trauma desert” on the South Side, according to UChicago Medicine.
A Block With a Documented History of Gunfire
This is not the first time this specific block has seen bloodshed. On June 21, 2026, a 49-year-old man was shot multiple times while standing near the sidewalk in the same 200 block of West Pershing Road and was hospitalized at UChicago Medicine, according to CBS News. In June 2024, a drive-by shooting on the same block wounded three teenagers — a 15-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl — after a gunman exited a vehicle and opened fire, per a report from FOX 32 Chicago. And in May 2020, a drive-by shooting there wounded three people, including a 5-year-old girl who was shot in the leg while playing in her front yard at Wentworth Gardens, according to CBS Chicago.
If suspects are eventually identified and convicted, Illinois law imposes steep mandatory penalties for first-degree murder. Under state statute, a conviction carries a mandatory sentence of 20 to 60 years, with defendants required to serve the entire imposed term under truth-in-sentencing guidelines, according to the Stavros Law Offices. State law also mandates an additional sentencing enhancement of 25 years to life when an offender personally discharges a firearm that causes death during a first-degree murder, per the Restore Justice Foundation, with that enhancement served at 85% to 100% under state law.
Part of a Wider Citywide Pattern
The double homicide adds to a violent stretch across Chicago this summer. Through the first six months of 2026, CPD statistics showed 210 homicides and 686 shooting incidents citywide, a 6% increase in homicides and a 4% increase in shootings compared to the same period in 2025, though totals remained below 2021-2023 levels, according to WTTW News. Vehicle-based attacks in particular have repeatedly struck the South Side this year; on June 19, a drive-by shooting on West 95th Street in Roseland wounded roughly a dozen people when two shooters inside a red SUV fired into a crowd, as Hoodline previously reported.
No arrests have been announced in Monday's shooting, and detectives have not said whether surveillance footage from nearby CHA properties or traffic cameras captured the fleeing silver Nissan. The investigation remains active as police continue working to identify the three suspects.
