Westlake is set to get a massive new shopping anchor as homes continue spreading across western Palm Beach County. The planned Walmart Supercenter will bring groceries, a pharmacy, garden supplies, auto services and a gas station to a part of the county that has been adding rooftops at a rapid clip. Shoppers will need some patience, though, because no construction or opening date has been announced.
According to WPTV, Minto Communities USA announced Friday that it sold a 24-acre parcel in Town Center West to Walmart. The store is planned just west of Seminole Pratt Whitney Road near 60th Street North, where it will sit next to a future Lowe’s Home Improvement store.
What Westlake’s Walmart Will Include
The Westlake City Council approved the site plan in April for a 188,779-square-foot main building on 24.29 acres, according to city meeting records. The project also includes a separate 1,618-square-foot convenience store with 10 fueling positions, bringing the total planned building area to about 190,397 square feet.
The proposed store is designed as more than a basic big-box outlet, with a full grocery department, pharmacy, drive-through pharmacy service, vision center, garden center, home and fashion merchandise, liquor sales, online pickup and delivery, and a three-bay automotive area. City documents describe it as a customized Westlake design, with the main building set roughly 1,000 feet west of Seminole Pratt Whitney Road behind a landscaped corridor and lake.
Walmart Joins Lowe’s In Westlake’s Retail Push
The Walmart announcement follows Minto’s January land-sale announcement for a future Lowe’s in Town Center West. Minto Communities said the Lowe’s project will span about 134,148 square feet and also serve as a regional headquarters, while the nearby Publix plaza has seen foot traffic climb more than 116% since opening in 2023.
The Walmart approval was not completely drama-free. Residents at the April hearing raised concerns about traffic, truck deliveries, parking, property values and the pressure a new regional shopping destination could put on Seminole Pratt Whitney Road, but the city’s traffic engineer presented studies and the council approved the site plan 5-0 with conditions.
Those conditions include operating hours from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., no overnight parking, ongoing landscaping and replacement requirements, and standards for signage and parking-lot cleanliness, according to the council minutes. The city also required a future traffic analysis for possible intersection improvements.
A Fast-Growing Customer Base
The retail expansion is arriving alongside an unusually fast population surge. The Florida Department of Transportation estimated Westlake’s population at 6,685 in 2025, compared with 906 in 2020, a jump that helps explain why national retailers are now eyeing the community.
Minto is building single-family homes, estate homes and townhomes in Westlake, with prices starting in the $300,000s, while the broader community has room for thousands more homes and additional commercial space. For now, the biggest question hanging over the new Walmart is not whether it has been approved, but when residents will finally be able to pull into the parking lot.
WPTV reported that Minto and Walmart have not provided a timetable for construction or the store’s opening. Until then, Westlake’s retail future remains very much under construction—at least on paper.
