A 17-year-old is dead after being found with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound on Indianapolis' north side Monday morning, and police have opened a homicide investigation even though no one has been arrested. Officers were called to the 600 block of West 39th Street at around 7:52 a.m. after a report of a person shot.
According to Fox 59, IMPD North District officers arrived to find the teen with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. He was initially listed in critical condition before being pronounced dead at the hospital. Police are now calling the case a homicide, though the exact cause of death remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
An adult male was detained at the scene for questioning, but he was released pending further review, the station reports. Investigators also recovered a firearm from the scene. Police said they do not believe anyone else was involved in the shooting and are not searching for any suspects, even as they continue working to determine who pulled the trigger and why.
Community Leader Points to a Recurring Struggle
Rev. Charles Harrison, a member of the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition, said family members and IMPD were still trying to determine what happened. Per the same report, Harrison said the fatal shooting illustrates the broader challenge of keeping guns out of the hands of children, and he advised parents to make sure their juvenile children do not have access to firearms.
IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson echoed that message, saying adults, parents and guardians need to stay involved in children's lives. Thompson said active adult involvement is necessary to help prevent shootings like this one, and IMPD described the incident as tragic — a case involving a juvenile, a firearm, and a life lost.
A Pattern Across Indianapolis
Monday's shooting is not an isolated case on the city's north side. An August 2025 shooting at an apartment complex in the same area, reported by IndyStar, also left a juvenile boy dead. More recently, a 17-year-old was killed and a 14-year-old was hospitalized in an east-side shooting at a home in late August, according to a separate Fox 59 report.
Other juvenile shootings have struck different parts of the city this year. In May, two juveniles were shot on the near south side, one fatally, per WTHR. Days later, a 16-year-old boy died in a shooting at apartments on the northwest side, as reported by WISH-TV.
