An 8-year-old girl was found unresponsive inside a home on Bancroft Street on Indianapolis's east side Wednesday morning and later pronounced dead at the scene. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the home, near English and Emerson avenues, around 7 a.m., and the circumstances surrounding the girl's death are still being determined.
The Southeast District operates out of headquarters at 1150 S. Shelby Street and covers southeast Indianapolis zip codes including 46201 and 46203, according to Indiana 211.
Hoodline previously reported on a similar case in which a 1-year-old boy found unresponsive on Indianapolis's near-north side in July was later reclassified as an active homicide investigation once forensic findings developed.
Legal Framework Around Child Deaths in Indiana
Any determination that a child's death resulted from a caregiver's neglect carries severe legal consequences in Indiana. Under Indiana Code 35-46-1-4, knowingly or intentionally placing a dependent in a situation that endangers their life or health is a Level 1 felony carrying 20 to 40 years in prison when the neglect results in the death of a child under age 14, according to the Law Office of Mark Nicholson. Separately, Indiana Code 31-33-5-1 legally obligates any person who has reason to believe a child is a victim of abuse or neglect to report it immediately to the Department of Child Services or local police, as outlined by the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor's Office.
Indiana has 66 local child fatality review teams covering all 92 counties. The Indiana Department of Health also has a Fatality Review and Prevention program.
A Pattern State Officials Are Watching Closely
The Bancroft Street case lands amid heightened scrutiny of pediatric deaths statewide. Just this month, State Health Commissioner Dr. Lindsay Weaver told the Child Services Interim Study Committee that 1,629 children ages 0 through 17 died from external injuries in Indiana between 2021 and 2025, with sudden unexpected infant deaths and transportation accidents among the causes identified, according to WIBC 93.1 FM.
No cause of death has been released, and it remains unclear whether investigators observed any signs of trauma or neglect at the Bancroft Street home. IMPD has not said whether any adults present at the residence are facing questioning.
