Amazon plans a robotics manufacturing plant in Greenwood, promising 300 new jobs with average salaries across the roles of nearly $100,000 a year by the end of 2028.
The $100 million investment adds advanced manufacturing to Amazon's Indiana footprint, which includes data centers, wind and solar farms, and other operations, according to Amazon's press center. The project will add manufacturing capacity in Greenwood, as reported by the Indianapolis Business Journal.
What Amazon Plans to Build There
Inside the retrofitted building, Amazon plans to combine advanced fabrication, robotic welding, automated powder coating, and assembly under one roof, all coordinated by AWS cloud infrastructure and AI-powered smart manufacturing software. The plant will need computer numerical control operators, welders, powder coating technicians, assemblers, manufacturing engineers, quality assurance specialists, controls engineers, and program managers to keep production running. Those roles are meant to produce the products that power Amazon's fulfillment and robotics network across the country.
The Greenwood site will become Amazon's fourth U.S. robotics manufacturing facility, following an August 2026 announcement of a similar hub in Austin, Texas — together doubling the company's robot-making capacity nationwide, per Quartz. Before this year, Amazon operated only two robotics manufacturing facilities, both in Massachusetts, the outlet notes. Amazon acquired Massachusetts-based Kiva Systems in 2012, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Officials Tout Wages Above the Regional Average
Indiana Governor Mike Braun said Amazon's decision to locate the facility in the state demonstrates the strength of Indiana's manufacturing workforce and infrastructure, adding that the investment will bring 300 high-paying skilled jobs to the community. Amazon's Holly Sullivan said the company is bringing 300 advanced manufacturing jobs to Greenwood while continuing to invest across Indiana. Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers said the 300 skilled jobs, with average salaries of nearly $100,000 a year, will bring long-term value to the city, adding that Greenwood is proud Amazon chose it for the investment.
The facility's promised average salary is nearly $100,000 a year. Amazon has said the facility will create jobs with a median salary well above the regional average, and officials have framed the plant as a way to strengthen the company's supply chain while investing in the surrounding community.
Part of a Bigger Robotics Push — and a National Debate
Greenwood is not new territory for Amazon. The company has operations in Indiana. Statewide, Amazon has invested more than $40 billion in Indiana since 2008 and created more than 27,000 jobs in that span, per figures cited in Fox 59's reporting on the announcement.
The Greenwood buildout follows a similar Amazon robotics manufacturing announcement in Austin the prior month. The Greenwood project raises the question of whether local incentives, such as property tax abatements, are involved.
Amazon has manufactured more than 1 million industrial robots in the U.S. to date, deploying them across more than 300 facilities worldwide to assist with roughly 75% of customer orders, the company's press center says. Amazon says safety improved meaningfully as it deployed robots alongside warehouse employees. The Greenwood plant is planned to create 300 skilled manufacturing jobs.
