A month after August flooding in Anderson, recovery efforts continued. The broader picture includes local and state assistance, as well as a high-water mark not seen in more than a century.
Assistance is available as recovery continues
The State Disaster Relief Fund offers grants of up to $5,000, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. FEMA applications were available statewide.
Anderson set aside $600,000 in food and beverage tax revenue for one-time $1,000 emergency payments to roughly 600 households whose primary residences were damaged.

The flood’s wider impact
The flooding followed repeated storms across east-central Indiana from Aug. 11 to 17. The National Weather Service says some areas received more than a foot of rain, and that the White River at Anderson set a record crest, surpassing its previous record from 1913, according to its flood summary.
Flood exposure and river history
Statewide, flood insurance coverage is limited: the Indiana Flood Insurance page reports 15,781 policies in effect in 2025 among more than 2.5 million households, or less than 1% of households. The National Weather Service’s record crest in Anderson can be viewed alongside the 1913 flood record, with a measurement caveat. The Midwestern Regional Climate Center’s Anderson profile says the 1913 crest was 22.1 feet on the gauge and datum then in use, equivalent to 23.6 feet at the Anderson Waterworks Site.
Six teams inspected 600 flood-affected homes in less than 21 hours, according to WTHR’s report on the city’s recovery effort. The city also waived permit fees, provided free public bus transit and placed 70 dumpsters in affected neighborhoods, according to IndyStar’s gallery. Anderson’s recovery work continues.
