Atlanta police officers responding to a call at an apartment complex at 2090 Campbellton Road SW found 19-year-old Malang Touray shot multiple times in the chest and stomach in late December 2022. He died later, and nearly four years on, no suspects have been publicly identified in his killing.
Atlanta police asked the public Wednesday for help solving the cold case, holding a news conference at 2 p.m. that Atlanta News First streamed live. Touray was a 19-year-old who attended Georgia State University and a May 2022 graduate of Therrell High School in Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was the eldest of seven children, affectionately known to family as “Booman,” the paper reported.
Touray's mother has offered a $10,000 reward for information about his killing, as reported by Atlanta Black Star. Touray's family has conducted flyer distribution and public outreach to encourage witnesses to come forward, per the same outlet.
An Investigative Error Compounded the Family's Grief
The case took a painful turn when an initial Atlanta Police Department incident report mistakenly identified Touray himself as an armed suspect hiding under a stairwell. A supplemental APD report later corrected the error after confirming Touray was wearing entirely different clothing than the person captured on surveillance video, according to Atlanta Black Star's reporting. Touray's family maintains he was ambushed by someone lying in wait under the stairs while he was visiting an acquaintance, the outlet notes.
The shooting occurred at The Hills at Greenbriar apartments at 2909 Campbellton Road SW in Southwest Atlanta, where Touray lived, the AJC reported, with initial emergency calls directing officers to the Campbellton Road corridor complex. Touray grew up in the city, according to his obituary from Wimberly Funeral Home. He attended Therrell High School and Georgia State University. He was the first-born son in his family and had expressed a strong desire to provide for his relatives, the funeral home wrote.
A Corridor With a Troubled Recent History
Touray's death came during one of Atlanta's deadliest recent years. The Atlanta Police Department investigated 170 homicides citywide in 2022, placing his late-December killing among the final ones recorded that year, per the AJC. Citywide homicides then dropped 21% in 2023 to 135 cases and fell 43% by early 2026 compared to 2022 levels, as the City of Atlanta Police Department credits to increased enforcement against illegal firearms and gang activity.
Even so, the Campbellton Road SW corridor has been the subject of reporting on safety concerns, including a fatal crash, as Hoodline has previously reported. A separate shooting was also reported nearby.
Cold Cases and the Clearance Rate Problem
Homicide clearance rates are one measure used in discussions of how cases are resolved. Research has examined differences in homicide clearance rates among communities.
Wednesday's news conference was held, and Touray's mother offered $10,000 to generate leads nearly four years after the shooting. Atlanta police have not publicly identified any suspects in the case, and anyone with information is being urged to come forward as investigators continue working the case.
