A Chicago man locked up at the Lake County Jail in Indiana is accused of using a jail-issued tablet to pose as the county sheriff in an alleged $500 scam targeting a woman. The allegations center on Quincy D. Jones and sheriff impersonation.
How the Alleged Scam Unfolded
According to The Times, Jones allegedly contacted the woman using a jail tablet while impersonating the Lake County sheriff. The alleged scheme involved $500.
A Familiar Playbook in Other States
Scams built around fake promises of a loved one's release from jail have surfaced well beyond Indiana this year. In South Carolina, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said investigators tied nine people incarcerated across seven Georgia prisons to a scheme that used contraband cellphones to call victims, pressuring them to send money for bond, ankle monitors or pretrial release, according to The Post and Courier. That outlet reported more than 100 victims had been identified in Richland County alone, with losses in individual cases ranging from $500 to $25,000.
Lott told WIS-TV that within the past year, 100 victims in the county had lost more than $100,000 combined, with 20 of those victims affected since October. Investigators there said callers used fear tactics and pressured people to send money through apps or prepaid cards. Accounts of how much one victim, Arthur Monk, lost in a similar call diverge between outlets — The Post and Courier reported he was scammed out of nearly $12,000 after a $2,000 bond demand sent through Cash App, while WIS-TV reported he lost just over $11,000 after being told his incarcerated son needed help.
Ohio Sheriff Issued a Similar Warning
A parallel pattern turned up in Ohio earlier this year, when Butler County officials warned residents about a scam seeking payment for a family member's immediate release from jail, according to WLWT. In that scheme, callers identifying themselves as “Sgt. Andy Young” told victims their incarcerated loved ones could be enrolled in a “DRC Class” for $950 and then released on an ankle monitor. The Butler County sheriff said several people had already fallen victim, losing thousands of dollars, the station reported.
The Lake County case centers on a Chicago man held at a Lake County, Indiana, jail and accused of impersonating the sheriff in an alleged $500 scam.
