Dance Kaleidoscope is kicking off its 55th anniversary season with a headless horseman wielding a real sword, a larger-than-life horse puppet, and a basement tavern serving pre-show drinks — all inside a 1922 Indianapolis hall the company doesn't normally call home. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, an immersive dance-theater retelling of Washington Irving's classic tale, runs October 2 through October 11 at McGowan Hall on the corner of 13th and Delaware streets, according to WISH-TV.
The 75-minute production marks a deliberate departure from Dance Kaleidoscope's usual proscenium home at The Tobias Theatre at Newfields, which remains the troupe's primary mainstage venue, according to a report from Urban Times Online. Artistic Director Joshua Blake Carter said the production was chosen to launch the milestone season with a bold, theatrical experience, per WISH-TV. Carter took over the company in 2023 after a 14-year career with Chicago's Giordano Dance Chicago, succeeding David Hochoy, who announced his retirement as artistic director in October 2022 after 32 years of service, according to the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis.
A Historic Hall Doubles as an Immersive Set
McGowan Hall was built in 1922 by the Knights of Columbus Mater Dei Council 437 on land that once held the estate of interurban railway magnate Hugh J. McGowan, per McGowan Hall. The venue's grand hall seats up to 400 people, and for this production it becomes a fully immersive Sleepy Hollow environment rather than a traditional theater setup.
Attendees can head to the venue's basement Tarrytown Tavern before the show, which opens at 5:30 p.m. ahead of evening performances and serves specialty themed drinks, according to the Weekly View. Performances take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at McGowan Hall, per WISH-TV, and the production blends dance, theater, live music and puppetry into one continuous 75-minute experience, the Weekly View reports.
A Puppet From Saturday Night Live's Design Shop
The show's larger-than-life horse puppet was built by Monkey Boy Productions, a puppet design studio known for its work on NBC's Saturday Night Live, according to Visit Indy. The production also includes award-winning puppetry, original music by Brandon Carson, costume design by Liz Bourgeois, lighting design by Laura Glover, and set design by William Boles, per WISH-TV.
Choreographer and director Joshua L. Peugh has been commissioned for more than 60 original works nationwide, including narrative dance adaptations like Macbeth for Ballet Memphis and Sweeney Todd for Boston Dance Theater, Visit Indy notes. Dance Kaleidoscope's 2025–26 season also featured Train, a work by Robert Battle, per the same report. Dancer Gavin Kimmel, who plays the Headless Horseman, worked closely with Peugh on the role and told WISH-TV that performing with a real sword adds visceral intensity to the role.

Dance Kaleidoscope is offering 50% ticket discounts through Indiana's Access Pass program for select Sleepy Hollow performances running October 9 through 11, aimed at income-eligible Hoosier families, according to dancekal.org. The company was originally founded in 1972 to bring contemporary dance into Indiana public schools, making it one of the Midwest's longest-running professional contemporary dance ensembles, per its own history. Its artistic director role carries the official title of Christel DeHaan Artistic Director in perpetuity, a designation tied to a legacy gift from the late Indianapolis philanthropist, who died in 2020.
Sleepy Hollow is just the opening chapter of a 55th anniversary season that continues through June 2027, according to WISH-TV. Urban Times Online reports the full calendar includes a winter show in February 2027, an anniversary gala in March 2027, a spring show in April 2027, and a summer finale in June 2027 featuring new work by Carter and Sean Aaron Carmon.
