A 31-year-old Des Plaines motorcyclist died Saturday night after colliding with a Jeep SUV at Oakton Street and First Avenue in Mount Prospect, in a crash that closed a major suburban corridor for hours and left a 19-year-old driver with minor injuries.
Mount Prospect police say officers responded shortly after 8 p.m. to a serious crash involving a Jeep SUV and a motorcycle, according to CBS News Chicago. Officers arriving on scene found the motorcyclist in the roadway and began life-saving measures before the Mount Prospect Fire Department transported him to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead. The victim was identified as Daniel Nikov, 31, of Des Plaines.
Police say Nikov was traveling westbound on Oakton Street toward First Avenue in the median lane when the Jeep SUV exited First Avenue and attempted to turn left onto eastbound Oakton Street, colliding with his motorcycle, per the CBS report. The Jeep's driver, a 19-year-old man from Carpentersville, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

Oakton Street was closed between Badger Road and Higgins Road for hours as investigators worked the scene, and it did not reopen until around 1:45 a.m. Sunday, per the CBS report. The Mount Prospect Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Team is handling the probe, and it's asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information to call 847-818-5301.

Other Fatal Crashes in Mount Prospect Other fatal crashes have also been reported in Mount Prospect. On June 20, 20-year-old Des Plaines resident Scotty J. Stuck was killed after colliding with an SUV on Rand Road, a crash Hoodline previously covered. Then in August, a rollover collision at Northwest Highway and Mount Prospect Road killed a 93-year-old driver, a crash Hoodline also reported on at the time.
Notably, both motorcyclists killed in Mount Prospect this summer — Nikov and Stuck — were residents of neighboring Des Plaines, according to the Village of Mount Prospect. Both fatal motorcycle crashes also involved SUVs, and both cases fit a pattern Illinois transportation data has tracked closely: the state recorded 128 motorcycle crashes involving a left turn in 2023, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Statewide Numbers Underscore the Risk to Riders
Illinois recorded 168 motorcyclist fatalities out of 1,245 total traffic deaths in 2023. Statewide motorcycle-fatality figures are part of the broader safety picture. National safety comparisons also underscore the risks to riders.
Mount Prospect police have also been keeping a close eye on rider safety more broadly. On June 28, officers monitored a motorcycle safety awareness event on Rand Road that drew roughly 300 riders, during which two motorcycles collided and injured three people, as reported by Cardinal News.
Investigators have not said whether the 19-year-old Jeep driver will face citations or charges as the Major Crash Investigation Team completes its reconstruction of Saturday's crash. Questions about vehicle speeds and visibility at the intersection remain part of the ongoing probe, and police have not released additional findings beyond confirming the vehicles' directions of travel.
