One person is dead and multiple others were injured after an eight-car crash tore through East Palo Alto, according to a Tuesday report. The scale of the pileup, and the fact that it claimed a life, has rattled a city that has seen more than its share of deadly wrecks in recent years.
The crash was first reported by KTVU FOX 2, which confirmed that one person died and several others were hurt when eight vehicles collided in East Palo Alto. No identities have been released for the person who died or for those who were hurt.

A City With a History of Deadly Crashes
This is far from the first fatal crash to hit East Palo Alto. In August 2025, a chain-reaction collision on U.S. Highway 101 killed one person and left two others with major injuries, according to Palo Alto Online. Two more people suffered minor injuries in that four-vehicle wreck, which the outlet reported began when a northbound white Acura SUV allegedly rear-ended a gray Toyota RAV4 just south of University Avenue around 2 a.m. A third vehicle, a white Subaru SUV, then struck the Toyota before crashing into the median; its driver suffered injuries that were fatal.
Fatal crashes have also struck East Palo Alto's surface streets. Back in 2017, a collision at University Avenue and Kavanaugh Drive killed a 49-year-old man and injured three other people, per NBC Bay Area, which reported that University Avenue was closed in both directions afterward. In 2022, KRON4 reported that a car traveling at a high rate of speed on westbound University Avenue lost control and struck a tree, killing its only occupant.
Police Response to Past Collisions
East Palo Alto police have also responded to fatal collisions involving pedestrians. In February 2023, officers were called to the 2200 block of Ralmar Avenue for a vehicle-pedestrian collision, according to a statement from the City of East Palo Alto Police Department. In that case, police said their initial investigation did not indicate the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and the department noted the investigation remained ongoing while it asked witnesses to come forward.
Whether any of those same questions will apply to Tuesday's eight-car crash is not yet known. No cause, contributing factors, or official injury count have been confirmed for this latest incident.
