A stabbing near the intersection of Lucy Street and Southwest 8th Avenue in Florida City sent two people to the hospital by helicopter Thursday night, with two others also needing treatment at the scene. Florida City Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were dispatched to the area just after 9 p.m., and both victims were treated as trauma alerts before being flown to an area hospital.
According to WSVN, MDFR paramedics also treated two other people at the scene who did not need hospital transport. The conditions of the two airlifted victims remain unknown, and as of Friday morning, it was unclear whether anyone had been taken into custody in connection with the stabbing, the station reported.
Trauma facilities in South Miami-Dade include Jackson South Medical Center, a Level II trauma center in Kendall, and HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, a Level I trauma center in West Kendall, per Elstein Legal.
How Air Rescue Responds in South Dade
Those flights are handled by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Air Rescue Bureau, which operates a four-aircraft fleet out of Tamiami and Opa-Locka airports with 24/7 “Alert Aircraft” crews of flight medics and pilots standing by, according to Miami-Dade County. The county says helicopters transport patients to the nearest appropriate trauma or medical center.
If a suspect is eventually identified and charged, Florida law treats a stabbing causing great bodily harm as Aggravated Battery, a second-degree felony under Florida Statutes § 784.045, per the Florida Legislature. A conviction on that charge can carry up to 15 years in state prison and up to $10,000 in fines, according to FL Criminal Defender.
A Street With a Painful History
This is not the first time the Lucy Street corridor has drawn a heavy emergency response. In November 2024, Hoodline reported that Florida City Police responded after a multiple gunshot-detection alert led officers to South Point Apartments, where they found a fatally wounded 9-year-old boy, Antavious Scott. A 19-year-old suspect was later arrested by county homicide detectives in that case, Local 10 News reported in January 2025.
While Florida City maintains its own municipal police department, the Miami-Dade Police Homicide Bureau took the lead in the 2024 shooting, according to Miami-Dade County.
Part of a Rough Stretch for Florida City
Thursday's stabbing adds to a string of violent incidents that have rattled Florida City. In July, Hoodline reported that prosecutors charged a driver with attempted felony murder after surveillance footage allegedly showed her accelerating into a Florida City crosswalk, striking a pedestrian who needed emergency hospital transport, in what the outlet described as a crosswalk horror.
Just weeks before that, Hoodline reported that the family of Nathaniel Baez, a 23-year-old man fatally shot inside the Florida City Walmart Supercenter in 2023, filed a civil lawsuit against the retailer alleging negligent store security. The shooting also injured one innocent bystander, according to the outlet's coverage.
And just days before Thursday's stabbing, Rocquel McCray was arrested after allegedly threatening to shoot up the Florida City Police Department station. McCray was taken into custody at a local restaurant, according to reports.
