Indianapolis woke Tuesday to clear skies and temperatures in the low 70s, but the calm start will give way to a dangerous stretch of heat. The city is headed for an afternoon high near 96 degrees, with humidity pushing the heat index as high as 104.
Heat Advisory Runs Through Thursday
A Heat Advisory takes effect at 2 p.m. Tuesday and remains in place through 8 p.m. Thursday across central Indiana, according to the National Weather Service. Southwest winds will run about 6 to 9 mph Tuesday, while the chance of rain stays near zero under sunny skies.
Wednesday and Thursday will bring little relief, with highs again near 96 degrees and heat indexes between 100 and 102. Overnight lows will only fall to the mid- to upper 70s, making it harder for homes and bodies to cool down after sunset.
Storm Chances Arrive Late In The Week
The pattern begins to loosen Friday, when temperatures ease to around 94 degrees and a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms develops. Rain chances rise to about 30% Friday night and Saturday, although Saturday should remain mostly sunny with a high near 91.
Sunday brings a more noticeable step down, with a high near 87 and a slight chance of rain showers. Labor Day looks mostly sunny and cooler, topping out near 86, with overnight lows dipping into the mid-60s Sunday night and Monday night.
Plan For Heat During Afternoon Hours
Forecasters advise drinking plenty of fluids, limiting time outdoors during peak heating and checking on relatives and neighbors. Indy Parks says its family centers can serve as cooling centers during extreme temperatures; residents should check the city’s cooling center information for locations and hours.
