According to CBS Chicago, Chicago police said a 27-year-old man was driving a Kia eastbound on 72nd Street when it struck a Chrysler SUV that was heading northbound on South Shore Drive. The impact pushed the badly damaged SUV into a CTA bus traveling the same corridor, according to the outlet's report. Fire officials told the station that one person was taken to the hospital in serious condition, while another was transported in good condition.
It remains unknown how many people were aboard the CTA bus at the time of the crash, per the same report. Chicago police said an investigation into the multi-vehicle crash is underway.
A Corridor With a Recent History of Bus Incidents
South Shore Drive is no stranger to serious incidents involving CTA vehicles. Just two blocks north of Monday's crash site, a woman slipped and fell in front of a bus that had just begun moving in the 7000 block in December 2025, according to a Chicago Police Department statement reported by FOX 32 Chicago. That earlier incident proved fatal.
The stretch of roadway at 72nd and South Shore Drive sits along a route served by CTA's #6 Jackson Park Express and #26 South Shore Express, according to Moovit transit data, connecting South Side residents directly to downtown Chicago.
