A comedy club space that sat empty in downtown Indianapolis for years is getting a second life. Mad Hatter Shows opens its new venue at 207 N. Delaware St. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, with comedian Nick Griffin headlining at 7 p.m., bringing live stand-up back to a building with deep roots in the city's comedy scene.
The address is a familiar one for longtime Indianapolis comedy fans. It was previously home to Crackers Comedy Club, a stand-up destination that ran for roughly 40 years before closing in 2022 after struggling with pandemic disruptions, nearby road construction, and rent obligations, according to the Indianapolis Business Journal. The space sits on the second floor, directly above India Garden restaurant, the outlet reported.
Griffin, the opening headliner, is a 30-year stand-up veteran who has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman 11 times, according to his Wikipedia page. His September 5 set, scheduled for 7 p.m., kicks off what Mad Hatter Shows describes as a weekly lineup of programming at the new downtown room, as reported by WISH-TV.
A Company Built Over a Decade of Small Shows
Mad Hatter Shows is run by promoter Neil Snyder, who started booking comedy in 2012 with a series called “Comedy in Crawfordsville” before growing the operation into a regional Midwest touring outfit, per the Journal Review. WISH-TV reports the company has been staging live events for 10 years, and Snyder said the two venues now let Mad Hatter reach more residents across the Indianapolis area.
The downtown club is Mad Hatter's second permanent physical venue. The first opened in Greenwood at 916 E. Main St., soft-launching in August 2025 inside a former dinner theater space, the Daily Journal reported. That Greenwood location will keep hosting its own weekly shows even as the downtown room ramps up, according to WISH-TV.
Beyond Stand-Up: Tribute Bands, Murder Mysteries and Line Dancing
Mad Hatter's programming stretches well past traditional stand-up. Its venues have featured tribute band concerts, murder mystery dinners, film screenings with meet-and-greets, music performances, and even line dancing nights, per WISH-TV. During its first year in Greenwood, the company also booked variety headliners including America's Got Talent ventriloquist Darci Lynne, WWE star Mick Foley, and comedy veteran Jimmie “JJ” Walker, according to the Daily Journal.
The downtown venue's early autumn calendar includes comedy magician Andy Gross the same weekend as the launch and actor-comedian Kevin Farley later in the month, on September 24, per listings tracked by AllEvents. Further out, comedian Sean Fogelson — known online as “That One Mailman” after building a following with viral videos made while working as a postal worker — is booked for a New Year's Eve show at 10:30 p.m. on December 31, 2026, the Daily Journal reported. Comedian Tom Arnold is also expected to bring his stand-up tour to Indianapolis in January 2027, though WISH-TV reports no specific performance date has been announced yet.
Downtown's Comedy Market Has Changed Since Crackers Closed
Mad Hatter isn't the only game in town. Downtown Indianapolis live comedy expanded in 2019 when national chain Helium Comedy Club opened a 275-seat venue at 10 W. Georgia St. inside Circle Centre Mall, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported at the time. That gives Mad Hatter's independently run, variety-driven model a national competitor just blocks away as it tries to rebuild the audience Crackers once drew downtown.
For ticket buyers, Mad Hatter has designated Etix as its official direct ticketing partner for the downtown venue, aiming to keep sales away from third-party markup sites, according to Etix listings. WISH-TV also reports the company is offering a 50% discount with the code HATTER and sells tickets directly through its own website.
