A man is dead after Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers found him shot at the intersection of South Mitthoefer Road and Bucktail Boulevard around 11 p.m. yesterday. Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services personnel rushed him to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
IMPD officers were dispatched to a reported shooting at the intersection, according to Fox 59. Homicide detectives responded to the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the victim was initially listed in critical condition before he succumbed to his injuries, according to WTHR. It remains unclear whether investigators have identified a suspect, a motive, or surveillance footage from the residential blocks surrounding Bucktail Boulevard.

The intersection falls within IMPD's East District, which spans roughly 52 square miles and serves more than 156,000 residents out of district headquarters at 201 N. Earlier this year, in April, a shooting near East 38th Street and North Mitthoefer Road left one person in critical condition, and in August a man was killed at an East 21st Street motel while a second shooting struck the east side minutes later.
Citywide Homicides Down Sharply Since 2021 Peak
The recurring violence along Mitthoefer Road stands in contrast to Indianapolis' broader crime trends. Annual criminal homicides in the city dropped nearly 45 percent between 2021 and 2025, falling from a record high of 241 to 133, a decline IMPD leadership has attributed to focused deterrence strategies and community violence intervention, according to WFYI.
That momentum has reportedly continued into 2026. IMPD has reported ongoing double-digit percentage declines across major violent crime categories citywide, including non-fatal shootings and homicides, through the first half of the year, with city officials crediting data-driven patrols and targeted enforcement, per Fox 59's earlier coverage. Public safety and criminal justice operations continue to account for more than half of Indianapolis' annual municipal budget, according to SAVI, the Polis Center's data platform.
What Comes Next for Any Suspect
Under Indiana's House Enrolled Act 1296, which took effect in July 2022, eligible residents 18 and older can legally carry a handgun in public without a state-issued license, though statutory restrictions still apply to people with prior felony convictions, per FindLaw's summary of the law.
