A 20-year-old man who punched, strangled and bit a 71-year-old family member during a brutal attack at her Big Rock Township home has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder. Koda R. Uebel entered the plea in a Kane County courtroom, closing out a case that began when relatives watching a home security camera from afar called 911 to stop the beating in progress.
Kane County Circuit Judge David Kliment accepted the negotiated plea agreement and handed down the 12-year state prison sentence, according to Shaw Local. The attack unfolded on May 31, 2025, in the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue in Big Rock Township, where Uebel repeatedly punched, slapped and kicked the woman before strangling her and biting her across her face and body, per the seed reporting from FOX 32 Chicago. Other family members witnessed the assault through the home's security camera and phoned 911 as it happened.
Kane County Sheriff's deputies arrived just after midnight and, looking through a locked front door, saw Uebel striking the woman while he threatened to kill her, deputies reported. The station's report notes deputies forced their way into the home and pulled the woman to safety. Assistant State's Attorney Mark Stajdohar told the court that the deputies' quick forced entry likely saved the 71-year-old's life.
Deputies Were Attacked Too
The violence didn't end once deputies got inside. Prosecutors say Uebel turned on the responding officers, biting one of them during the struggle to take him into custody; a deputy used a taser before Uebel was finally subdued, per the same account. Deputies reported at the time that Uebel smelled of alcohol and slurred his speech during the confrontation.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
Judge Calls Attack Among the Worst He's Seen
The judge reportedly described the attack as among the worst he had encountered in four decades in the legal system. Stajdohar said the assault on an elderly family member was beyond comprehension, adding that Uebel inflicted devastating physical and emotional trauma on the victim and that he will now spend the next decade in prison facing consequences for his actions. Assistant State's Attorneys Mark Stajdohar and Cristopher McCall prosecuted the case for the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, according to Shaw Local.
Uebel was arrested after the attack. Under Illinois law, battery against a victim aged 60 or older is elevated to aggravated battery, reflecting the state's enhanced statutory protections for elderly residents, per the Illinois General Assembly's 2026 statute.
What the Sentence Actually Means
Uebel received a 12-year prison sentence. Because Illinois' truth-in-sentencing statute requires those convicted of attempted first-degree murder to serve at least 85 percent of their court-imposed sentence, Uebel must serve roughly 10.2 years, according to CWBChicago, though he will receive credit for the 482 days he already spent in the Kane County Jail awaiting resolution of the case.
