A man died late Monday night after being struck by a car while crossing 700 East near 4100 South in Millcreek, according to police. The man was hit at 11:51 p.m. and passed away at the scene, and his name has not been released as his family is notified.
Crash Site Closed for Investigation
Officers with the Unified Police Department closed the roadway in both directions while the specialized Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team, known as CART, processed the scene, according to Gephardt Daily. The victim was found in the northbound lanes of 700 East, and the crash remains under investigation. As reported by KSL.com, the driver stayed at the scene, and police say the crash did not involve alcohol.
Unified Police Sgt. Aymee Race told the station the man was hit while crossing the street, and that he was in the street outside a crosswalk at the time. “Please use crosswalks. Look at your surroundings when crossing the street,” Race said, per the same account.
What Utah Law Says About Right-of-Way
Utah law draws a firm line on who has the right-of-way depending on where a pedestrian crosses. Under Utah Code § 41-6a-1002 and § 41-6a-1003, drivers must yield to pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks, but pedestrians crossing outside of crosswalks are required to yield to oncoming traffic, per Robert DeBry. That distinction is likely to factor into how investigators and any legal proceedings characterize Monday night's crash.
This is not the first fatal pedestrian crash the Unified Police Department has investigated in Millcreek this year. On January 18, 41-year-old Anthony Aragon was struck and killed while crossing a street in the city, in a separate incident reported by KUTV 2 News.
A Seasonal Pattern on Salt Lake County Roads
Pedestrian-involved crashes in Utah tend to climb between September and November, as shortening daylight hours reduce visibility during early evening commutes, according to Good Guys Injury Law. Statewide, pedestrians are involved in only about 1.15 percent of all traffic collisions, yet they account for 16 percent of traffic deaths — making them roughly 11 times more likely to die in a crash than someone inside a vehicle, the same source reports.
Salt Lake County has consistently seen the highest concentration of pedestrian fatalities in the state. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data cited by BAM Personal Injury Lawyers shows the county recorded 22 pedestrian deaths out of 68 total motor vehicle fatalities in 2023, more than any other county in Utah. Statewide, preliminary figures from the Utah Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety showed 41 pedestrian deaths in 2025, down slightly from 44 the year before, even as overall traffic deaths fell to a six-year low of 264.
Local Safety Efforts Along 700 East
Millcreek and UDOT have set aside capital improvement funds for safety and active transportation upgrades along major corridors, including sidewalk construction and ADA ramp improvements along sections of 700 East, according to city planning documents. The road, also known as State Route 71, runs north-south through the Salt Lake Valley.
Investigators have not said whether toxicology results or other contributing factors will be part of the ongoing review of Monday night's fatal crash.
