A 19-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and an 18-year-old man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital early Wednesday after the Subaru they were riding in drove off South State Road 446 and overturned in rural Monroe County. The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 8300 block of South State Road 446 near East Allens Creek Road, south of Bloomington.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said officers responded to a single-vehicle crash with injuries in that stretch of road, according to WTHR. The woman, identified as a 19-year-old from Medora, was riding as a passenger and was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver, an 18-year-old from Franklin, was flown to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.
Investigators with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office are still working to determine what led up to the crash, per the outlet's report. The sheriff's office has not said what caused the Subaru to leave the roadway before it overturned.
A Specialized Team Takes On the Reconstruction
The agency's Major Crash Investigation Team responded to the scene, the same unit the sheriff's office built out less than a year ago specifically to handle severe and fatal wrecks. The team was established in October 2025 using a $123,636 grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, according to the Indiana Daily Student. It consists of four officers, including a team commander, two crash reconstruction specialists, and a drug recognition expert, per WBIW's reporting on the unit's formation.
The team previously worked another fatal wreck in February, when a Subaru crossed the centerline on South Rockport Road in a head-on collision that killed one person and injured others, according to a Monroe County Sheriff's Office news release. Whether speed, mechanical failure, weather, or impairment played any role in Wednesday's rollover remains an open question for investigators.
A Rural Corridor With a History of Fatal Wrecks
The stretch of State Road 446 near Allens Creek Road sits in a rural, heavily forested area south of Monroe Lake that leads toward the Allens Creek State Recreation Area and Hoosier National Forest, according to event listings maintained by the State of Indiana. It's not the first fatal single-vehicle crash along that corridor: in February 2025, a Monroe County firefighter was killed in a rollover crash on State Road 446 near Dutch Ridge Road, as reported by WTHR.
Monroe County, home to an estimated 143,345 residents as of last year, sees a mix of rural commuter traffic and seasonal visitors headed to Monroe Lake along roads like State Road 446, per data compiled by ABetterDriver. The crash also comes just two days after a statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign wrapped up across Monroe County, a high-visibility effort that ran from August 19 through September 7 with funding from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, according to WBIW.
Teen Drivers Face Outsized Risk Statewide
The ages of the two people involved echo a broader pattern researchers have flagged in Indiana. Drivers under 20 were involved in 38,245 crashes statewide in 2023, resulting in more than 5,000 injuries, according to data compiled by the Indiana University Public Policy Institute and cited by Glaser & Ebbs. Research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has also found that carrying a passenger under 21 increases a teen driver's risk of a fatal crash by 44 percent, per reporting from CKF Law.
Statewide, impairment remains a leading factor in fatal crashes. Preliminary 2025 data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System showed that nearly 23 percent of Indiana traffic fatalities involved alcohol impairment, while more than 41 percent involved drug impairment, WBIW reported. It is not known whether impairment played any role in Wednesday's crash, and the sheriff's office has not released further details as its Major Crash Investigation Team continues working to determine what happened on State Road 446.
